Honoring this week’s release of Apache® CouchDB™ 2.0, the New Builders Podcast welcomes two leading CouchDB committers – Jan Lehnardt (@janl), VP of the Apache CouchDB Project, and Bob Newson (@rnewson), Sr. Database Engineer for IBM Cloudant. Jan and Bob, longtime members of the CouchDB Project Management Committee, have worked tirelessly to help deliver the new version of CouchDB, which brings new clustering capabilities, performance enhancements and more – much of it brought in from the BigCouch fork created by the Cloudant team.

During the interview, Jan and Bob talk through the events that originally brought each of them to the CouchDB project (1:58), how CouchDB has made the journey from single node system to clustering for big data-scale (5:55), how the BigCouch and CouchDB code bases were merged despite many challenges (8:43), the biggest new opportunities developers have with CouchDB 2.0 (14:28), how the Offline First movement was born in the CouchDB project (18:30), what’s next for CouchDB (26:00) and more.

Push notifications, search, location-based features – consumers have grown very cozy with having such features in their mobile and web apps. And now, they’re expecting them in business apps, too. What’s an enterprise app developer to do? This week, Adam Fingerman (@afingerman), Chief Experience Officer and Co-founder of the mobile app design and development company ArcTouch, joins The New Builders podcast to help answer this question and discuss the ongoing consumerization of enterprise apps.

During the conversation, Adam provides his take on the biggest challenges in making enterprise apps function more like consumer apps (03:58), how data privacy and security concerns in the enterprise impact consumerization (06:53), what is to come with the IoT and new ‘smart communities’ (08:18), IT hurdles to bringing new data sources into enterprise apps (12:27), and his recommendations for developers planning to work in larger enterprises (16:40).
